Orthognathic Surgery
CORRECTIVE JAW SURGERY
Orthognathic Surgery
Orthognathic surgery is the surgical detachment and repositioning of the jaws into a corrected position. Orthognathic surgery is required when the patient has congenital, developmental, or traumatic injuries that cause the maxilla, mandible, or both to be positioned incorrectly. This usually results in abnormalities of the occlusion (bite) and of facial shape.
Orthognathic surgery aims to establish proper jaw position and alignment. It can greatly improve the following:
- Facial symmetry
- Airway support
- Facial profile and balance
- Function (i.e. chewing, speech)
- Proper occlusion (bite relationship)
- Smile aesthetics
